Notes:
- People living in Indian settlements and reserves in the 10 provinces were not included in the 2006 Aboriginal Children's Survey (with the exception of some First Nations communities in Quebec) and in the 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey. In the three territories, all First Nations, Métis and Inuit people were included in the target population.
- The term 'First Nations People' is also used in other Statistics Canada products.
- 'Aboriginal identity' refers to those persons who reported identifying with at least one Aboriginal group, that is, North American Indian, Métis or Inuit, and/or those who reported being a Treaty Indian or a Registered Indian, as defined by the Indian Act of Canada, and/or those who reported they were members of an Indian band or First Nation.
- 'Registered Indians' (also referred to as 'status Indians') refers to those persons registered under the Indian Act while 'Treaty Indians' refer to people who are registered under the Indian Act and who belong to an Indian Band or First Nation that signed a treaty with the Crown.
- 'Aboriginal ancestry' refers to those persons who reported at least one Aboriginal ancestry (North American Indian, Métis or Inuit).
